part 4: Falshad

Hello?Elt;/span>

Hello?  Is this Danica?Eamp;nbsp; The voice on the phone was frantic and high-pitched.

Yes, it is,EDanica mumbled in affirmation, rubbing sleep from her eyes.  Who is it?Elt;/span>

This is Mrs. Vance.Elt;/span>

Danica snapped awake.  Something was obviously not right.  Mrs. Vance, how are you?  Whats the matter?  You sound awfully worried.Elt;/span>

Is Raven there at your house?Elt;/span>

Danicas head was fully cleared now.  Why, no, Mrs. Vance.  She hasnt come yet this morning for me to drive her to school.  Isnt she there?Elt;/span>

No, shes not here!  This morning, when she didnt come downstairs after her father and I called her several times, we went up to her room, and it was empty!  Her bed wasnt made and her pajamas werent there, which means she must have disappeared sometime in the night, and the window wasnt open!Elt;/span>

Wait, what?  What what what what what?  That cant be right!Elt;/span>

Weve searched the house and theres no sign of her having been on the lawn last night.  If somebody kidnapped her we didnt hear it because of the storm.  We thought that she might have gone to your house for some reason Egod knows shes there often enough.Elt;/span>

Well, I havent seen her, and I have to get ready for school, but Ill definitely keep an eye out for her.Elt;/span>

Thank you.  Im calling the police now.  Have a good day at school.Elt;/span>

Good luck.  Bye.Elt;/span>

Danica put the phone back in its receiver, pulling her fingers through her tousled hair.  Something about all this is not right.  She ran upstairs to get ready for school.  I need to tell everyone else!

Rakesh signed onto his AIM screen name, zeus1316E knowing well hed find Enmed online.  The blue-haired boy practically lived on the Internet.  He smiled grimly as he saw that the name moodyblue84Ewas online and instantly keyed an instant message to him.

Rakesh was rather surprised; how could Enmed have known that?  Ah, he probably guessed it because Ravens got so many troubles.  He typed, ravens gone missingE

When Enmed didnt reply, Rakesh wondered, until the following message appeared.

Raven looked around, dazed.  Am I really here?  She saw the thick, towering trees, the like of which shed never seen before in real life, the wild and luxurious plant life.  The sky was a seamless bowl of brilliant blue, adorned with a few fluffy white clouds, and birds flew everywhere, bright jewels of sparkling color.  She squinted in the sunlight as she craned her head to look behind her and beheld far away the city walls of proud Camelyn.  The walls, tall and stone-grey and seemingly impenetrable, belied the destruction that had taken place inside.  For some moments she simply sat in the dusty road and stared round her in amazement.  I am.  Im really here.  In Falshad.

She stood and looked down at herself.  I wonder what the first person passing by will think of me.  Wearing my pajamas of all things.  Ha!

Turning to stare at Camelyns walls again, she frowned.  Lets seeE guess this is about the time the new ruler, some guy from Vicolph, took the throne?  I think thats right.  Well, I dont know.  Has he been taken over by the evil spirit thing yet?  She threw up her hands in sudden exasperation.  What the fuck am I gonna be able to do by myself?  I guess for now I should just try to get back homeEut how the fuck am I gonna do that?

She began to walk away from Camelyn.  That place gives me a bad, bad feeling.  She shivered.

Hey you!  Miss!Elt;/span>

Her head snapped up.  WaitEow do I understand him?  Maybe I picked up the language from my dreams?

Approaching her was a group of wagons, each pulled by four placidEell, what were they?  Raven blinked.  They werent horses or donkeys or mules or even llamas, although there was a vague resemblence to all four.  The creatures were four-legged and had shaggy coats in various shades of brown and grey.  Their necks were long and arched and their heads were rather small, with long, swiveling ears and wise, deep-set eyes.  Their tails, short tufts of fur, swayed back and forth with their easy, gentle movements.  Their legs were stocky and the dull hooves were cloven.

The lead wagon pulled to a halt beside Raven.  Noticing the wonder and curiosity in the girls eyes, the man holding the reins said, Theyre kerli, miss.  Have you never seen them before?Elt;/span>

She shook her head solemnly.

Under a rough brown cloak flapping in the wind, the man wore a white overrobe with some kind of red symbol on the left and red tunic and trousers.  He looked to be middle-aged; his thinning hair and mustache were brown, his twinkling eyes a steely grey-blue.  He seemed kind and jovial.

He whistled.  Well, I knew you had to be a foreigner when I saw your odd clothing Eodd round here anyway E but you say youve never seen kerli!Elt;/span>

Raven looked down at herself wryly.  Her flannel pajamas were loose and black and spangled with silver stars.  The man asked, Are you some sort of mage?Elt;/span>

Raven laughed self-deprecatingly.  No, Im afraid Im just a little lost girl.Elt;/span>

Oh, lets bring her along with us,Ecoaxed the pretty auburn-haired woman beside the man.  Shes just a child and shes all by herself.Elt;/span>

Well, I dont see why not.  Do you want to come along, miss?Elt;/span>

Raven shrugged.  I wouldnt want to be a burden or anythingE

Oh, its nothing,Ethe woman cut in.  Climb on in.Elt;/span>

All right.Eamp;nbsp; As Raven settled herself in comfortably amid several large cushions and thick blankets, she saw a variety of packages in the back of the wagon.  The wagon started again; raising her voice over the rattling of the wheels, Raven asked, Are you people merchants?Elt;/span>

Yes, we are.Eamp;nbsp; The woman smiled at her.  Perhaps youve heard of the merchant Caso?Elt;/span>

Im afraid not.  I come from very, very far away.Elt;/span>

Oh.  Well, this is Salen Caso the woman patted the shoulder of the man beside her and Im his wife, Tenme.  Whats your name?Elt;/span>

Raven considered making up a name, then figured that because nobody in Falshad knew her, it wouldnt really matter.  Raven.  Its nice to meet you, Mrs. Caso.Elt;/span>

Oh no, the pleasures mine.  Call me Tenme.Elt;/span>

All right.Eamp;nbsp; Raven smiled shyly as they shook hands.  Tenme Caso was an immediately likable woman, with her oval face and friendly, sparkling green eyes and motherly air.  She wore her thick hair in a braid; little wisps and curls of it had escaped and framed her forehead.  Her outfit was the same as that of her husband.  The small boy in her arms yawned, and she rocked it, murmuring something to it soothingly.

Hi hi!Esaid a cheerful voice.  Raven turned.

A small girl of about ten years of age was sitting beside her.  Her wavy chestnut hair had been pulled into two pigtails and her bright eyes were a smoky blue, a softer version of her fathers.  Your names Raven?  Thats a nice name.  My names Lelem.  Im nine years old, how old are you?Elt;/span>

Raven smiled at her.  Nice to meet you, Lelem.  Im fifteen years old.Elt;/span>

Lelems eyes widened.  Oh, wow, youre the same age as my brother!  His names Desem.Eamp;nbsp; She gestured her small hand toward the wagon behind them.  Hes in the wagon behind us.  My older sisters with him.  Her names Tenen and shes seventeen.  Shes driving.  My other brothers driving the wagon behind them.  Hes eighteen and his names Solan.  My other sisters with him; her names Rakev.  Shes thirteen.  Ensans the baby of the family.  Hes four.Elt;/span>

Wow.  Thats a lot of brothers and sisters.  Do you know, you remind me of my little sister?Elt;/span>

I do?  Tell me about her.Elt;/span>

Well, her names Phoebe.  Shes about your size and shes ten, so shes a year older.  Shes got pretty black hair and grey eyes, big like yours.  Shes like a little bird Ealways fluttering and chattering and singing.Elt;/span>

Lelem smiled.  Thats nice.  Ill be your little sister while youre here, kay?Elt;/span>

Sure.  And Ill be another big sister.Elt;/span>

Yeah!Elt;/span>

Excuse me, Tenme.  Where are we going?Elt;/span>

Tenme turned around, answering, Were headed for Camelyn.  Big trading to be done there.Elt;/span>

All right.Eamp;nbsp; Raven shivered involuntarily.

Whats the matter, dear?Elt;/span>

OhE  Raven hesitated, then said, This will sound strange, but I just get a bad feeling from that place.Elt;/span>

I understand, dear.  I dont care too much for the atmosphere myself.  But we go once or twice every year because its good business, and we just lock up a little tighter and sleep a little lighter than usual at night.Elt;/span>

Raven nodded.  Okay.Eamp;nbsp; But I think my reasons for not liking the place are rather different from yoursElt;/i>

Mama, when are we stopping?E Lelem asked.

As soon we get to Camelyn, dear.  Its not too long.Elt;/span>

How long?Elt;/span>

Salen answered, About an hour.Elt;/span>

Lelem sighed.  Raven smiled and gently took the childs round hands.  Here, Ill teach you some hand games.  My friend taught them to me when we were kids.Elt;/span>

Yay!Elt;/span>

*              *              *

Three days,EDanica whispered.  Three days shes been missing and we have no idea where she is.  Well, maybe we do, but its not like we can get there.  Three days only and its like forever.Elt;/span>

Kiren rubbed her shoulders, saying gently, Well find her.  Dont worry.Elt;/span>

Rakesh shook his head.  Its hard not to worry.Elt;/span>

Yeah.Elt;/span>

What do you think, Enmed?EYash queried, his voice unusually subdued, with none of its teasing.

Enmed, cool and reserved as ever, looked to him away from the window he stood by.  I still feel shes in Falshad, wherever that may be,Ehe replied quietly.

That doesnt do us any good,E Skye said.  Like Danica said, we have no way to get there.Elt;/span>

I dont know,EDanica whispered.  I just dont know.Elt;/span>

*              *              *

Buy our wares!  Casos wares!  The finest anywhere!Eamp;nbsp;

Laughing, Raven joined in the chorus.  Come buy Casos wares!Eamp;nbsp;

When theyd first entered Camelyn two days ago, she had been so amused by the attitude that the general public displayed towards her Eone of awe and curiosity and near-disbelief E that shed agreed to help with sales.  Tenme remarked that in well over a decade theyd never had such success selling wares in Falshads capital city.  Raven was wearing a special version of the familys outfit: a black tunic and loose black pants, both sprinkled with silver stars, and over that a white robe with the familys symbol in silver.

Tenme tapped Raven on the shoulder now.  Your shift yellings over.  You and Desem go eat lunch now, all right?  Be back in three hours or so.Elt;/span>

Raven smiled in thanks as the other woman placed some golden okals in her hand.  No problem.  Thanks.Elt;/span>

You two have fun now!ETenme called after them as Raven and Desem walked away from the stall.  They waved in response, then plunged into the crowd.

Desem was a rather tall, well-built boy with thick, golden-brown hair, his mothers radiant green eyes, and a cheerful, open manner.  He turned to Raven.  So you come fromEhere?  Something starting with PEElt;/span>

Oh, a little nothing town named Sugar in a place called Pennsylvania.  Pennsylvanias a state in America, which is the country I live in.Elt;/span>

AmericaE Desem repeated slowly.  Then he frowned.  What is a state?Elt;/span>

Oh.  A states likeE region.  There are fifty states in America.Elt;/span>

Interesting.  Tell me, is your home anything like this place?  Here?Elt;/span>

Raven shook her head emphatically.  Its very, very different.  Nothing like this place.E She looked around wistfully.  I like this land.  In a way, the life here seems so free.  You can travel beneath the open air and not choke on smog, and theres so much natural beauty.  I mean, I love it at home, because its home and all, but there are tall steel and glass buildings everywhere Eeven in my nowhere town E and everyones more or less expected to attend 22 years of school, and societys so rigorous.  If you dont conform to a certain extent, youre pretty much a freak.Elt;/span>

Ah.  I see.Eamp;nbsp; Desem cocked his head, then suggested, Well, then, lets not talk of it now.  Let me take you to a little cafE  Its unknown to most, but the food is amazingly delicious, and its in the open, which is nice.Elt;/span>

All right.Eamp;nbsp; Raven followed the boys lead.  Desem led her amidst the numerous stalls and the throng in the citys open-air market to a small building squeezed on either side by a massive structure.  The sign read simply Open-air Caf.  Desem walked right in, Raven close behind.

Is this some kind of joke? she wondered.  This hardly looks open-air to me.  Then she spotted the glass-paneled door in the back.

How many?Easked the young waiter, liveried in simple black and white.

Two, please,EDesem said.

Right this way.Eamp;nbsp; The waiter opened the door, and Raven couldnt help but gasp in amazement.

The door led to a virtual paradise.  The tables Eshe couldnt tell how many there were Ewere painted white and carved exquisitely and covered with lacy white tablecloths.  The chairs, carved in the same manner as the tables and curved just so for comfort, held fat black cushions.  There were blossoming trees and plants in abundance, and around each table was a white trellis frame, over which crawled luxuriant flowers.  Here and there, vivid splashes of color, were songbirds.  She could just hear water trickling.  There must be a fountain somewhere.

This is justEustEncredible.  No, thats not the word Ethere are no words for it,ERaven said softly in awe to Desem as they followed the waiter.

Desem grinned rather shyly at her as the waiter stopped at a table right by the purported fountain.  Thank you, sir.  Isnt it, though?Elt;/span>

Yes.Elt;/span>

The waiter placed two menus on the table, told them, Ill be back in a few minutes for your order,Eand quickly disappeared.

Raven looked around her in fascination.  It seemed that she couldnt get enough of it all; she avidly drank in her surroundings.  The water cooled the air around them; birds chirped and trilled; the scent of flowers drifted to her on a delicate breeze.

Do you want to eat something?E Desem asked her after several moments, chuckling.

She joined him in laughing at herself in amusement.  I should pick something, shouldnt I?Eamp;nbsp; She scanned the menu, then looked across the table at her companion bemusedly.  But it all sounds so good!  How do I choose?Elt;/span>

Desem laughed again.  Ill pick something for you, then, hows that?Elt;/span>

All right.Elt;/span>

*              *              *

Sleepily, Danica opened her eyes, then started.  How long have I been asleep?Elt;/span>

Not long,ESkye said.  Just a few minutes.Elt;/span>

Danica yawned.  You should have woken me up.Elt;/span>

I figured you needed the sleep.  You lie awake worrying about Raven, dont you?Elt;/span>

You do too, Kiren.Elt;/span>

Kiren shrugged.  Well, whatever.  Anyway.  Its been a goddamn week and theres still no sign of her.Elt;/span>

Do you still have that feeling, Enmed?EYash asked.

The blue-haired boy shook his head mutely.

You dont anymore?Elt;/span>

Enmed chose his words deliberately.  I dont feel it anymore.  I know.Elt;/span>

What do you mean?EYash questioned skeptically.

Enmed shrugged.  I just do.Elt;/span>

Rakesh threw up his hands.  Weve already gone over this.  If thats where she is, thens its no good for us because we cant get there!Elt;/span>

Danica laid her head in her hands.  Raven, wherever you are Ecan you hear me?  Raven!

*              *              *

Drowsy and contented, illuminated in orange by the dancing fire, Raven yawned.  Its been a nice day.Elt;/span>

Yeah,ERakev agreed.  She stretched her arms, her auburn hair tumbling down over her shoulders, and yawned also.

Desem gently pulled Raven close to him, resting her head on his shoulder.  Seeing this, Tenme shared a warm, affectionate smile with her husband across the flames.

Your cooking was delicious,E Desem said softly to Raven.

Was it?Elt;/span>

Yes.Elt;/span>

Im glad.Eamp;nbsp; The dark-haired girl smiled sleepily up at Desem.

The entire family sat around the fire, tired after a brisk day of sales as Solan, the eldest, played his harp and sang a slow melody.  Raven found his voice, low and compelling, very lulling.  She yawned again.

/en.  Raven!/

What?  Danica?Eamp;nbsp; Raven sat up, shocked.  Solan paused in his playing; everyone looked at her.

/Yes!  Its me, Danica!  I have no idea how but I managed to reach you.  Come back!/

/How?  How do I get back?/

/IE dontEait!  How much do you want to come home?  I mean, you want it a lot, right? /

/Its nice hereEut I want to be home, I want to be home now!/

/Then think of nothing but coming home!  Kiren and I are waiting here for you!  We all are!  Imagine us in your mind!  Can you see us?/

/YeahEeah, I canElt;/i>/

/Keep wishing!/

Raven clenched her fists, eyes shut tight.  Yes!  I want to go home! she thought.  Take me home E now!

To her astonishment, as she opened her eyes, she was glowing.  Somehow encouraged by this, she wished harder.  TAKE ME HOME!

She began dissipating into sparkling motes of grey light.  Raven!EDesem cried.

Gently, she touched his face.  She knew well that he liked her, though she hadnt said a word to him.  Im sorry, but I have to go home now.  Ill come back here someday.  I dont know when, but I will.  That, I think I can promise.  Because I need to come back here.  So dont be sad.Elt;/span>

What!  Raven

Good-bye,Eshe whispered.  In a rush of wind the particles of light spiraled upward, fading away.

*              *              *

Ahhh!Eamp;nbsp; Raven landed violently against the wooden floor of Kirens sitting room, giving a short cry of pain.  My spineE

Danica immediately crushed her in a hug.  Raven!  Raven!  Youre back!Elt;/span>

I am?  I am!  Danica!Elt;/span>

Danica released her friend, who was immediately swept up by Kiren.  Raven!Elt;/span>

Kiren!Eamp;nbsp; Raven flung her arms around the boy who was practically her brother.  Gods, I didnt think Id ever see you again.Elt;/span>

As Jon simply squeezed Ravens shoulder, Skye impulsively embraced her.  Im glad youre back!Elt;/span>

Aw, thanks.Elt;/span>

Raven was quite surprised when Rakesh hugged her.  Im glad too,Esaid the russet-haired boy softly.

Yeah,ERaven said.  Im glad to be back home.Elt;/span>

Oh, what the hell,EYash said, and he clasped Raven in his arms.  Good to see you, sweetheart.Elt;/span>

Raven laughed.  Good to see you too.Elt;/span>

Enmed nodded at her silently in acknowledgement.  Raven, a hint of smirk on her face, nodded back.

So now that weve all affirmed that youre alive and well, where were you?!EDanica demanded.  Were you really in Falshad?Elt;/span>

Raven looked rather surprised.  How did you guess?Elt;/span>

Yash indicated Enmed with a sweeping gesture.  He said so.E

Oh.  Well, yes, youre right, I was in Falshad.Elt;/span>

Howd you get there?EKiren queried.

Raven shrugged.  I just wished to be there, and all of a sudden I was.Elt;/span>

Why would you want a crazy thing like that?!Elt;/span>

I want to help them!E Raven shot back defensively.  How can I not want to help them, all those people living there, after having those dreams?  You wouldnt understand E youre not having them.  But if you were, you would.  Theyre so powerful, and the people are so real.Elt;/span>

Everyone was silent, their eyes trained on her.

Raven herself had been quite astounded by her outburst.  She sighed.  Sorry, Shazo.Elt;/span>

No, its all right.Elt;/span>

Innocent Skye defused the thick tension with a question.  What was it like over there?Elt;/span>

Raven smiled.  Really, its nice.  Just like in my dreams after the fighting.  I met this familyE

*              *              *

Poor Desem,ETenen whispered, watching her younger brother.  Desem and Rakev were laughing and playing with their two youngest siblings.

I know,ESolan said softly.  Hes trying so hard to be his usual cheerful self.Elt;/span>

The two siblings were quiet for a while, each lost in contemplation.  Finally, Solan asked, Do you think shell really come back?Elt;/span>

Tenen knew who her brother was talking about.  Perhaps.  She just might.Elt;/span>

I hope so.  Not only for Desems sake.  She was a very likable girl.Elt;/span>

Yes, she was.  And her cooking was delicious.  She was going to teach me a few recipes.Elt;/span>

She was going to teach me a few songs shed said were suited to the harp.Elt;/span>

Tenen sighed.  Its not any use to simply sit here and wish.Elt;/span>

Youre right.Elt;/span>

Without warning, Ensan and Lelem gave piercing shrieks, very different from their childish yells of delight just moments earlier.  Solan and Tenen leapt to their feet.

Swooping down toward their four siblings was a large demon, some unholy being from their deepest, darkest nightmares.  Covered in dense black fur, the beast had four legs and leathery wings sprouting from its shoulders.  On its hind legs were talons like an eagles, only many times larger.  Its hands both had four stubby fingers, each of which were tipped with a vicious, razor-sharp claw.  Its thick, whiplike tail served two purposes: its length and width and pliability allowed the demon to steer and turn through the air with ease, and the scythe-like blade at its end could be used to rip and tear.  From beak to tail-tip it measured at least twenty feet long, and its wing span was about the same.  Its large eyes, cat-pupiled and gleaming, were a vivid and noxious green.

All this would have been almost tolerable, but there was one thing about the deistex that caused people to either become paralyzed with fright or shriek and stumble away in terror.  That quality was the pure, tangible aura it emanated, an aura of fear and panic and all the darker emotions one could feel.

Quick-thinking Rakev had scooped up a screaming Ensan in her arms and was dragging Lelem along by the hand.  Desem was standing firm and holding up cupped hands.  He shouted, Elt;i>Dumensan kashpe!Eamp;nbsp; Blinding sun!

Perhaps surprised that a human boy would stand up to it so defiantly, the deistex was caught off-guard and received the full force of the spell.  Screeching, it instinctively clawed at its eyes, which made it scream all the louder.  It plummeted a good distance before it awkwardly righted itself just several feet off the ground, spreading its great wings with a loud snap.

Tenen ran forward, forming in her mind the words to summon a kershetepPlease, please, let one be near enough to come in time!

*              *              *

and the food was just amazing.  Delicious, exquisite Eall those kinds of words.  And Desem was so cheerful and kind and sweet.Eamp;nbsp; She smiled a little to herself.

Falling for someone, are we?E Kiren suggested slyly.

Oh, bite me, Shazo Eah!Eamp;nbsp; Raven doubled over, clutching her head.  AhEtop itE  Suddenly, she stopped, her head fell forward onto her knees, and her arms fell limply beside her legs, fingers grazing the floor.

Kiren shook her shoulder urgently; she slumped sideways onto the sofa.  Raven!  Wake up, damn it!Elt;/span>

After several moments, just as abruptly as shed passed out, she jerked up.  Lelem!  Ensan!  Desem!  Rakev!  Solan!  Tenen!  Wait!  Watch out!Eamp;nbsp; Then she blinked.  Oh.  Im here.  At home.  Right.Elt;/span>

Skye looked at her quizzically.  What was that about?Elt;/span>

I just had a dream, sort ofE

About what?EDanica asked.

A dream saying that the Caso siblings was in danger.  They were being attacked by something, a big black thing.  But hells, I cant do anything!  Whyd I have the dream?Elt;/span>

Maybe theyre in danger right now, right this moment, and you had that dream cause you know them?EYash suggested.

Raven shrugged.  Dunno.  Whatever.Eamp;nbsp; All the same, she sent up an invisible wish in her mind: Please, watch over them.  Please, somebody, save them.  Save them.  Theres nothing I can for them do myself.

*              *              *

Tenen whirled in astonishment as she heard the clarion tone of something like bells colliding with rock.

Before her stood a kershetep Especifically, a rukershetep Ethe largest and most beautiful specimem shed ever seen in her nine or so years of summoning.  Its coat was a gleaming, satiny white, and its mane and the tuft of hair on its tail were the same frosty color.  The lines of its body were clean and delicate, yet it somehow gave the impression that it cloaked tremendous power.  Its cloven hooves were an indefinable shade of silver-blue, and they rang whenever they struck a stony surface.  The horn on its forehead was a scintillating spiral of silver and blue.

The kershetep blinked its large, wide eyes at Tenen; they were the same hue as its hooves, but much more radiant, filled with light.  Like the moon, she thought.  She couldnt help but stare at in awe for a moment.

Then its deep, gentle thought-voice filled her mind.  /I have been called here, little one, by you and one other, and I have come.  What is it that you require?/

Oh!  Im sorry, I was very rude just now.  Is it in your power to make the deistex leave us?Eamp;nbsp; Tenen pointed at it.  It was now sitting quite still, attempting to use its other senses in compensation for its lost sight.  She prayed it would not find Rakev, who was sheltering the two youngest ones, or Desem, who was not very far away.

The kershetep appraised the deistex for a long, unnerving moment.  Then it nodded.  /I believe I can./

Oh, thank you!Elt;/span>

The kershetep stepped toward the deistex; the deistex immediately raised its head, sniffing and straining to capture any sound indicating a prospective victim with its ears.

/You will not find any victims here, deistex,/ the kershetep said sternly.  /I will give you a chance to leave before I must attack you./

The deistex considered its options.  Normally, when challenged, it would have flung itself into the fight without delay.  However, it had lost its sight.  In addition, it seemed that the kershetep it faced was rather wise, experienced in fighting.  The deistex was rather juvenile and hadnt had any real combat with a foe.

Being juvenile, though, it also thought it could win this fight without much struggle, and so the deistex flew straight at the kershetep.

The kershetep sighed.  /I warned you./  It wheeled out of the path of the incoming enemy.  The deistex braked abruptly and turned to locate the kershetep again.  However, the wind had shifted, carrying the kersheteps scent in the opposite direction, and for several moments the deistex hovered in the air, unsure.

The kershetep charged at it and swiftly disabled one of the deistexs hind legs with a well-placed kick; the bird-like creature squealed in pain, loud and shrill, then decided to leave very, very quickly.

Tenen called, Rakev!  Its all right now!  Its safe!Elt;/span>

Her younger sister, with the two youngest of the family in tow, materialized out of the underbrush of the trees lining the road.  Thank the gods.Elt;/span>

Well, I did a bit of summoning.Eamp;nbsp; She turned to the kershetep.  Whats your name?Elt;/span>

/My name is Quintis./

Ive never seen such a wonderful rukershetep as you,ELelem said earnestly.

The kersheteps soft chuckle reverberated briefly in their minds.  /Why, thank you./

Thank you very much for saving us,ERakev said.

Yes, thank you,Eall her siblings echoed.

Quintis,ETenen began hesitantly, when you came, you said youd been called here by me and one other.  What do you mean?Elt;/span>

/Well, someone else wanted me to come here too./

Who?Elt;/span>

/I dont know./

Did it make a difference?Elt;/span>

/Tenen, whenever you try to summon a kershetep, which kind do you usually get?  A kakershetep or a rukershetep like myself?/

She was puzzled by the question, but she answered, Well, usually a kakershetep.Elt;/span>

/This other person who also wished for me to come here.  I am one of the most powerful rukershetep in this area, and this other person is the reason I in particular came.  If you alone had called, you probably would have been answered by a powerful kakershetep.  And theres a possibility that you would have been answered by a rukershetep weaker than myself.  But this other person wished so strongly for you to be saved, and shesEaffiliated, for lack of a better term, with the rukershetep.  That is why I, instead of a kakershetep, came./

The Caso siblings were all silent for a moment, contemplating that.  Then Ensan said, I got a question.Elt;/span>

Rakev tousled his hair.  What is it?Elt;/span>

Whats the difference?Elt;/span>

The difference between what?Elt;/span>

A ruElt;i>rukershetep and a kakershetep.Elt;/span>

Solan laughed as he swung his smallest brother up on his shoulders, causing the little boy to squeal with delight, and explained, Its mostly a difference in color.  A kakershetep is white with red and gold, kind of like the sun; thats why theres the Elt;i>kaE in front, see?  And a rukershetep, like our friend Quintis right here, is white with silver and blue, like the moon.  Their powers are a little different, too.Elt;/span>

Kay.Elt;/span>

Would you be able to find out who that other person is?ETenen inquired.

/Perhaps./  Quintis closed his eyes and bowed his head.  Then he opened his eyes.  A spark appeared, hovering in the air beside him.  The spark unfolded Ethat was the only way to describe it Einto a line, then opened into a gentle grey-blue circle, soft and misty at the edges.  Gradually, an image materialized in the flat orb.

Raven!EDesem involuntarily cried out.

/I see that you know the girl./

Tenen covered her mouth with her hand.  How could she have known?Eshe whispered.

Quintis tossed his head in a gesture of unknowing.  /I dont know.  I cant help you there./

Well, thank you for saving us.Elt;/span>

/Youre welcome./  The kershetep galloped away, fading to nothing as it went.

Tenen tilted her head back to look up at the blue, blue sky.  Thank you, Raven, wherever you are.
